CR Urges Advocates on Ethics
Lawyers with the Acting Chief Registrar, HW Isaac Muwata after the enrollment ceremony

The Chief Registrar, HW Gadenya Paul Wolimbwa called upon advocates to maintain ethical standards as officers of court.

These remarks were contained in his speech to 42 newly enrolled court advocates at ceremony that took place at the Judiciary headquarters in Kampala on November 24, 2017.

The speech was read by High Court Registrar, HW IsaacMuwata.

The Chief Registrar reminded the advocates of their diverse roles to society, court and their clients.

"Your clients expect you to carefully take down their instructions, to fully follow up their cases and to candidly discuss with their pro and cons of their cases. You should however, note that sometimes, your clients' interests may put you in conflict with your own conscience and obligations to court."

He urged the new advocates to be bold enough to tell their clients the truth at all times.

"You must not conspire with your client to short-circuit justice or subvert the cause of justice," he said.

Mr. Samuel Olumo, the Executive Director of Uganda Law Society equally urged the new officers of court to be ethical and uphold court procedures.

In Uganda the legal profession is not fused; an advocate is an enrolled lawyer to the Bar and has a right of audience before the court whereas lawyers cannot address the court.
